A right-wing group called Patriot Prayer is planning a “Freedom Rally” on August 26 at Crissy Field. In response, counter-protesters are using social media to organize at least two separate actions against what they perceive as another “white power” rally like the one recently held in Charlottesville.
The first action is titled, “Leave your dog poop on Crissy Field,” encouraging pet owners to “leave a gift for our Alt-Right friends.” The invite continues, “Take your dog to Crissy Field and let them do their business and be sure not to clean it up!” That protest action starts noon the day before the planned rally and continues until 10am the next morning.
The second one, on the same day of the planned rally, is titled the “SF LovedUp Mobile Dance Counter-Rally.” Attendees are encouraged to not interrupt the white nationalist rally, but will dress in “amazing colorful fabulous best” and dance to “cheesy, party pop dance anthems.” A special invite has been extended to “all drag performers and sparkly freaks.”
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, SF Mayor Ed Lee and others have been vocal in their outrage at the park permit request and are urging the National Park Service to deny the permit. The park service, which has jurisdiction over the Golden Gate National Recreation area, falls under the federal authority. Park officials said in a statement, “We are guided by the Constitution, the law, longstanding court precedent, and National Park Service policy, which tells us we must be deliberative and not preemptive in our decisions related to First Amendment gatherings.”
