Filmmaker Kevin Smith told the crowd assembled for a 20th anniversary screening of Chasing Amy that star Ben Affleck considered himself a “serious actor” after kissing another dude during the shoot.
The Interwebs exploded as everyone and their grandmother had an opinion on something Affleck stated many years ago in the much less (or more, depending on your personal opinion) enlightened late 90s.
Smith was speaking at OutFest in Los Angeles and described the apprehension Affleck and his co-star Jason Lee felt before the dreaded BIG KISS between the two alleged heterosexuals. According to Smith, Affleck said, “A man kissing another man is the greatest acting challenge an actor can ever face.” Once the kissing scene was over, Affleck allegedly stated, “Now, I’m a serious actor.”
Recent Emmy nominee, out bisexual actor Evan Rachel Wood was not having it. Wood tweeted, “Try getting raped in a scene.” And later, “Also, grow up Ben.” Wood’s character Dolores was raped in the first episode of the acclaimed HBO series, Westworld. Wood wouldn’t back down even after it was discovered Affleck made the remarks 20 years ago, saying “Also, you think us ladies like kissing all the guys we kiss? Just cause its a ‘straight kiss’ doesn’t mean we enjoy it. Ahem.” Wood later deleted her tweets due to “the sickening things people have written in response. I don’t want to give that kind of hatred a place.”
Is this a nothing-burger disguised as something more meaty? By the time Smith posted an apology video on Facebook, most of it directed at Wood, the film and the filmmaker had garnered more publicity than either had in many moons. Has anyone seen any of his latest offerings, Cop Out, Tusk or Yoga Hosers? Thought so.
