Pope Francis never ceases to amaze. According to Juan Carlos Cruz, an openly gay survivor of clerical sexual abuse, the leader of the Roman Catholic Church recently said that Cruz is gay because he was born that way.
Well, technically Francis said that Cruz is gay because God made him that way — but same difference. Semantics!
Now, before we continue, let’s just pause for a moment to appreciate the irony of this news. We shouldn’t be shocked by the fact that the leader of the Catholic Church, an organization founded on humility and kindness, is actually showing compassion to someone, but here we are. Twist!! The furor surrounding this story just goes to show how corrupt the Catholic Church has grown in certain enclaves of the world.
The most heartbreaking part of this story is that Cruz’s sexuality only became an issue in the Catholic Church because the bishops in Chile, where Cruz was abused, attempted to paint Cruz as a liar due to his sexuality. They had claimed that because he was a “pervert,” he must have been lying about being abused by one of Chile’s most notorious Catholic pedophiles.
With that in mind, try not to tear up a little when you discover what Pope Fabulous told Cruz in their private meeting last week:
“Juan Carlos, that you are gay does not matter. God made you like this and loves you like this and I don’t care. The pope loves you like this. You have to be happy with who you are.”
In other words: “Juan Carlos, if you can’t love yourself, how in the hell you gonna love someone else? Can I get an Amen? Yes, GOD!”
And then he tore off his papal mitre and death dropped into the middle of St. Peter’s Square.
Can we get an “amen?”
