This fall, the CW will air an Arrow-verse four-part crossover special that will introduce gay superhero “The Ray,” to be played by out British actor Russell Tovey (ABC’s Quantico, HBO’s Looking). Tovey will also voice the character in CW Seed’s upcoming animated series, Freedom Fighters: The Ray.
The crossover special, “Crisis on Earth-X,” will take place at the wedding of The Flash/Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) and Iris West (Candice Patton) that is suddenly crashed by evil super villain doppelgangers from another universe.
According to DC comic book lore, The Ray was a reporter, hot on the trail of exposing a nefarious organization, until he was discovered and exposed to a ‘genetic light bomb,’ which gifted him with superhuman powers, including the ability to fly and create dazzlingly strong and powerful bursts of light. The Ray was recruited by the Freedom Fighters to quash violence and oppression wherever it exists.
Celebrated out comic artist and writer, Phil Jimenez, who worked on the “Wonder Woman” comic series, was commissioned by the CW to create the illustrated artwork for the special.
The show’s gay executive producer, Greg Berlanti, was instrumental in bringing The Ray to the network’s stable of superheroes, as he was with other gay characters, including Captain David Singh on The Flash and Alex Danvers on Supergirl. Melissa Benoist, who plays Supergirl, gushed about the special, “Two events happen that people are going to lose their minds about.”
Look for the crossover between Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow on November 27 and 28 on the CW.
