Sacha Baron Cohen’s out and Rami Malek is in as the star of Bohemian Rhapsody, the highly anticipated biopic about Freddie Mercury, the lead singer of Queen. The band announced the casting and additional details on their official site.
Gays and swooning women were agog this Emmy season – Malek won the Emmy last year for his performance in Mr. Robot – this year he wasn’t even nominated! Not really physically resembling Freddie, Malek’s intensity and passion is sure to set the screen ablaze. Malek will be doing his own singing – potential yikes (see clip from TV series The War at Home below). Not sure how you can even try to capture Mercury’s tenor powerhouse voice; Adam Lambert is currently singing lead for Queen and doing a pretty damn good job. BUT, we think they should let Freddie’s voice be used, there is a whole generation that hasn’t heard Freddie’s pipes outside “Bohemian Rhapsody” or “We Are the Champions.” Britney is currently singing to tracks, no one seems that upset. No word yet if Malek’s pants will be as tight as Freddie’s were – here’s hoping they are. Maybe the tight pants helped Mercury hit those high notes. Hmmm…
X-Men director Bryan Singer is at the helm. Hopefully the film will be a return to his acclaimed dramas like Unusual Suspects and Apt Pupil, instead of the CGI-reliant bloated spectacle of Jack the Giant Slayer and X-Men: Apocalypse.
Filming starts in London this September. We can’t wait to see the first pics of Malek as Mercury, and we’re hoping they recreate the dragtastic video shoot for “I Want To Break Free.”
