It’s no secret the current White House resident doesn’t care much about the LGBTQ community. He was too busy golfing and dodging questions regarding his scandal-plagued administration to address Pride Month. If he doesn’t even care about the tax paying community he sure as hell isn’t going to care about the plight of our brothers in the Russian republic of Chechnya.
In our bubbles of gay bars, drag races and the return of Will & Grace, it’s easy to forget about the archaic atrocities overseas where arrests, torture and murders take place on the regular under the ferocity of Kremlin propaganda. Not so fabulous. The community there has turned on itself in a gay witch hunt, where effeminate and infertile straight men are as likely to be rounded up as the men who have to conduct relationships under a blanket of secrecy. Neighbors are outing neighbors as well as family members. Though this seems lightyears away in some time warped nation, we’ve seen an uptick in violence and open hatred towards our LGBT community in the US of A.
MTV has decided to become relevant again and released a video with some celebs and allies from our circle (Jussie Smollett, Tituss Burgess among them) in hopes of raising awareness and placing pressure on our administration to get involved in what’s happening in Chechnya. The video has gone viral, tweeted and retweeted by a large number from the entertainment industry – all calling for us to sign the HRC petition to the White House to get involved and take a stand. In a post on their website they wrote, “Together we can raise the volume on the public outcry, and let the world know that we have our #EyesOnChechnya.”
Remember, folks, Cabaret wasn’t just a musical featuring Liza – it was a slice of history. History has a way of repeating itself.
