Yekaterina Petrovna Zamolodchikova, AKA Katya Zamolodchikova, AKA Katya, AKA Brian Joseph McCook, announced via Instagram live, in French, no less, that he would be retiring from drag for the time being.
In the video, he expressed the need take care of himself and have a break from the rigors of touring and performing.
“I need to take vacations, like a normal person. I’m not dying, I want to live. I’m a drug addict, but I’m sober. Today, and yesterday. And before. But I need to take a vacation, because I want to survive, like Gloria Gaynor.”
The 35-year-old Boston native was set to perform his first solo show as Katya entitled “Help Me I’m Dying” in seven different venues across the UK. That tour has been postponed until Spring 2019.
McCook, who stars in the popular Viceland series “The Trixie and Katya Show” with fellow RuPaul’s Drag Race season 7 alum Trixie Mattel, has decided that “health is most important” to him.
McCook has openly discussed substance use and mental health struggles while on Drag Race, and made it clear that he has remained sober, but needs time off.
Support has poured in for the Drag Race All Star, with former contestants and fans tweeting and posting their support.
No word yet on the fate of the Viceland series, which was recently extended by another 6 episodes.
As of press time, Katya’s Twitter account had been deactivated. Instagram was not.
We all wish Brian the best in whatever endeavors he chooses.
