The trailer for James Franco’s latest film is out and it looks like one his quirkiest efforts yet – an adaptation of The Disaster Artist, Greg Sestero’s acclaimed tell-all about the making of Tommy Wiseau’s cult disasterpiece The Room, considered to be “the Citizen Kane of bad movies.”
The Room writer/director/star Tommy Wiseau is a modern-day Ed Wood: a man famous for creating one of the worst movies of all time, only to watch it become a midnight movie classic. The Disaster Artist and Tim Burton’s Ed Wood both seem to treat their auteur’s cluelessness, naivety, enthusiasm and determination as endearing, not pathetic.
Franco’s brother, Dave co stars as Greg Sestero, longtime collaborators/BFFs Judd Apatow and Seth Rogen appear, as do Josh Hutcherson, Alison Brie, Jacki Weaver, Sharon Stone (?!), Zac Efron, Melanie Griffith (?!!) and Adam Scott.
A24 which produced the movie is well known for their critically acclaimed arthouse films. Previous releases include, Spring Breakers, The Witch, Ex-Machina and last years Best Picture Oscar winner, Moonlight.
The film had its World Premiere at South By Southwest in March where the movie received a standing ovation and critics were impressed with James Franco’s performance.
The Disaster Artist screened earlier this week at the Toronto Film Festival. It will hit theaters on Dec. 1 for exclusive engagements in the U.S., followed by a nationwide release on Dec. 8.
