Anticipation for Ryan Murphy’s American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace, which examines the 1997 murder of the fashion designer, is extremely high. After all, the first season’s The People Vs. O.J. Simpson was a huge hit and won nine Emmy Awards and the latest features an all-star cast, including Edgar Ramirez, Penelope Cruz and Darren Criss. One person who isn’t excited about it is Antonio D’Amico, the then-boyfriend of Versace at the time of his brutal murder and who will be portrayed by Ricky Martin in ACS.
Speaking with The Observer, 58-year-old D’Amico says he wasn’t consulted by the series creators and the images he’s seen online of his reaction to the murder are incorrect.
“The picture of Ricky Martin holding the body in his arms is ridiculous,” he said. “Maybe it’s the director’s poetic license, but that is not how I reacted.”
“There has been so much written and said about the murder, and thousands of suppositions, but not a trace of reality,” D’Amico added. The new series is based on Maureen Orth’s book Vulgar Favors: Andrew Cunanan, Gianni Versace and the Largest Failed Manhunt in U.S. History.
