Which Gay Anthem Makes Queen Elizabeth Dance?

When you think of music associated with the head of the British monarchy, you’re likely to imagine a rousing rendition of the official anthem “God Save the Queen” or perhaps it’s the Sex Pistols’ anarchic tune with the same title. However, word has leaked that Queen Elizabeth is just like us in that she loves to get down to ABBA’s dance floor classic “Dancing Queen.”

Details have emerged that following a recent royal dinner at Windsor Castle, the Swedish quartet’s 1976 hit, considered one of the quintessential queer anthems, was played and the Queen was not only amused but seemed genuinely pleased. She reportedly said, “I always try to dance when this song comes on, because I am the Queen, and I like to dance.” So do we!

Last year friends and family of Her Majesty revealed other songs on her playlist, which include show tunes such as “Oklahoma!” and “Anything You Can Do I Can Do Better.” A royal cousin, Lady Elizabeth Anson even shared, “The Queen is a fantastic dancer. She’s got great rhythm.” But can she feel the beat from the tambourine?
