Gay Anglophiles (gaynglophiles?) rejoice, your prayers have been answered. Eternal heartthrob Hugh Grant will team with another hot Brit thesp, Ben Whishaw, in a gay-themed drama A Very English Scandal. The project is a three-part series for BBC One and is based on a book of the same title by British journalist John Preston and will be adapted by Queer as Folk‘s Russell T. Davies and helmed by Stephen Frears, who’s delivered many classics including My Beautiful Launderette and Dangerous Liaisons.
Grant will portray disgraced British politician Jeremy Thorpe, whose career was ended in the late 1970s by allegations that he hired a hit man to kill and silence a former male lover Norman Scott, played by Whishaw. This will mark noted heterosexual Grant’s first gay-themed film since 1987’s Maurice. The openly gay Whishaw has numerous queer projects on his resume, including Brideshead Revisted, The Danish Girl and the recent BBC Two series London Spy.
