As the rest of the country has essentially sat on our asses complaining about the state of things and launching the occasional protest, the teenagers of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida have emerged as the true leaders of the Resistance. Now, if they could only help the Democratic Party get its shit together and act even remotely as unified, we might actually get somewhere as a society.
However, the cowardly Right is attempting to discredit these teenagers’ powerfully-held beliefs by painting them as “crisis actors” who are paid by anti-gun groups to speak to the press. That would, of course, imply that the press is in on it, too — which is unfortunately an easy pill to swallow for the part of our country that still believes in a “fake news” media.
But thanks to alt right sites like the Gateway Pundit, the “crisis actor” theory is actually gaining traction. Rush Limbaugh, Donald Trump, Jr., and a commentator on CNN have come forward endorsing the totally baseless theory. This mainstream attention has also encouraged the proliferation of additional conspiracies, such as one popular notion that the teens are actually FBI plants hired to defend the bureau for its failure to catch the shooter.
It’s a lazy, disrespectful, condescending, and flagrantly hypocritical tactic, considering the fact that the Republican Party has long endorsed its young voters and representatives as the “future” of our country. Apparently, however, they’ll only encourage the moral and spiritual development of young people if it involves passing laws that allow them to buy assault rifles.
David Clarke, former sheriff/current Fox News cog, is floating his own (head-scratching for a sane person) theory: billionaire investor/activist George Soros is behind all this. In a tweet posted on Tuesday, Clarke spewed the following, “The well ORGANIZED effort by Florida school students demanding gun control has GEORGE SOROS’ FINGERPRINTS all over it. It is similar to how he hijacked and exploited black people’s emotion regarding police use of force incidents into the COP HATING Black Lives Matter Movement.”
Let’s be real: If these teens were really actors, then they would 100% be played by ridiculously attractive full-grown men and women in their late-20s. Like, has the Republican Party never watched Riverdale?
