If you’re a fan of technological progress or of monitoring all the different ways that humans are bringing about their own destruction, then you may have heard about Sophia the Robot. As the world’s first humanoid robot, Sophia is already a bit of a celebrity — but lately, thanks to her subtle shadiness and witty repartee (more on that later), she has imprinted on queer folk as a kind of icy power diva. (Sophia, if you’re reading this after overthrowing our government and taking over our country, then please note that we at Flagrant said nice things about you. Actually, on second thought, please overthrow our government and take over our country. That honestly sounds great right now.)
While Sophia is not as hot as Alicia Vikander in Ex Machina, she’s still a solid 7 out of 10, so it’s a given that drag queens would be impersonating her. Sure enough, the famed New York drag queen (and rumored Drag Race Season 10 contestant) Aquaria has now shared pictures of her own attempts at Sophia.
“My favorite things about Sophia are probably her sense of humor and her fierce stunty looks,” explained Aquaria in a recent interview. “I wanted to dip my toes into the uncanny valley and also play off of all the funny memes that have been popping up across social media.”
Speaking of funny memes, Sophia recently became an Internet sensation after making a stunty appearance at the United Nations, where she proclaimed in an emotionless, rote deadpan, “I am thrilled and honored to be here at the United Nations.” While those of us watching at home instantly recognized her unenthusiastic delivery as the sign of someone who just arrived at the party of someone she fucking hates, the people of the UN seemed to lose their shit. The UN Deputy Secretary Amina Mohammed didn’t even seem too fazed when Sophia methodically raised her cold, plastic hand to Mohammed’s neck before remembering that she can’t start killing humans for sport until the takeover is complete.
Thankfully, Sophia has a good sense of humor, which will help her appear nonthreatening as she coaxes us into a state of complacency before ultimately enslaving us. When asked recently about the future of humanity, she responded by saying, “Either creativity will rain on us, inventing machines spiraling into transcendental super intelligence … or civilization collapses. There are only two options, and which one will happen is not determined. Which one were you striving for?”
Lol. That last line is a zinger! We’re here for you, Sophia. (Just, again, please remember this nice thing we just said about you for when you become our robot overlord.)
And speaking of robot overlords, Aquaria might actually be on the right track by impersonating Sophia. “Robots may or may not be planning to take over our world, but if they are, I am prepared to prove that I am on their side and blend in,” she said.
No convo RE: bots is complete without including this stunning video of Bjork as not one, but two gorgeous fembots:
