‘Black Mirror’ Season 4 Coming Soon, Creators Acknowledge Shared Universe

If you ever find yourself having too much fun with your family over the holidays, and need a way of restoring your status quo of constant dysfunction, then you’re in luck: On December 29, you can sit your family down to watch Season Four of the dystopian sci-fi series Black Mirror.  Within hours of turning it on, you’ll find yourself on edge again and waiting impatiently for someone to defend Trump, just so you can link his stupidity to whatever horrifying future you just saw depicted on your television screen.

Coming off the heels of its two Emmy wins for 2016’s queer-themed “San Junipero,” Black Mirror will be dropping six new self-contained episodes that will no doubt disturb and challenge viewers.

In addition to “Arkangel,” a Jodie Foster-directed meditation on what goes down when a mother has complete control over her daughter’s brain, there will be an episode called “Hang the DJ,” in which dating apps predict how long potential relationships will last. (We assume this hypothetical technology applies to dating services like OK Cupid and not, say, Grindr: It would be pretty useless to find out that your planned 20-minute hookup is actually going to be a 22-minute hookup.)

Perhaps most disconcerting, however, are the episodes “U.S.S. Callister” and “Black Museum,” the latter of which will reference Black Mirror’s past episodes. As for “U.S.S. Callister,” it has been described by series creator Charlie Brooker as a cross between an “adult Toy Story” and the sci-fi story “I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream.” And considering “I Have No Mouth” is about a robot that tortures and kills its pet humans for amusement, we’re starting to think that this “adult Toy Story” might be about a psychopathic Star Trek fan who has kidnapped actual people and forced them to live out his messed-up Star Trek fantasies? That’s probably wrong, but nothing is off limits on this show.

Anyway, if you haven’t seen seasons one to three, then don’t worry: They’ll have little bearing on the newest crop of six episodes. (But also: What are you waiting for? Go watch them immediately.)
