Hulu is actively developing the tentatively titled dramedy, Queen, a slightly fictionalized version of Emmy-winner RuPaul’s rise from club kid to drag queen to gay icon, then global star. Set in NYC during the Reagan-era ‘80s, the series is being produced by J.J. Abrams (Alias, Star Wars: The Force Awakens).
RuPaul Andre Charles, born in San Diego, moved to Atlanta where he studied performing arts and achieved notoriety in the club scene, then moved to NYC and his star ascended further. Mama Ru made it big with the 1993 crossover smash “Supermodel (You Better Work).” Then came the VH-1 talk show, The RuPaul Show, followed by RuPaul’s Drag Race, its umpteen spinoffs and world domination.
No launch date for the series has been announced.
