2017 has been quite a year for Cher. First, there was her performance at the 2017 Billboard Awards. Then there was this tweet:
Now, we’re being hit with the second half of a double whammy: In September, we learned that a Broadway musical about Cher’s life is set to premiere in 2018. Yesterday, we learned that Cher is going to be in Mamma Mia 2.
Outside of that being the gayest news ever, it’s also proof that Cher is still riding the wave of a major comeback. The songstress/Oscar winner/gay icon extraordinaire hasn’t actually appeared in a live action movie since 2010’s Burlesque with Christina Aguilera. (Don’t see it. Or do. But don’t say we didn’t warn you.)
It’s unclear yet WHY this is happening. Maybe a latent part of Cher’s brain was activated when Trump was elected President? Maybe it reminded her that the gays still need her? Or maybe a group of gay Wiccans got together last year and asked Manon to make 2017 the Second Coming of Cher?
In any case, Cher tweeted some fabulous silver dancing heels the other day, in addition to tweeting out “FERNANDO.” That could mean that she’s appearing in a “Fernando” number in the film, since that is the title of an ABBA song and not just a lyric from Lady Gaga’s “Alejandro.” However, it could also mean that Cher just really likes that specific part of “Alejandro.”
As for her the identity of her character, that’s still under wraps, but reports are saying that the sequel will focus on younger versions of the characters played by Meryl Streep, Colin Firth, and Pierce Brosnan. Could Cher be the younger versions’ mom? Sorry, that’s blasphemy … We meant sister!
