DIY Porn: Dan Savage’s HUMP! Film Fest Coming To A Theater Near You

Dan Savage’s 13th Annual HUMP! Film Festival tour is underway throughout the United States and parts of Canada.

HUMP! started in 2005 as a “joke” amateur porn festival. Savage took out a full-page ad in the Seattle alternative newspaper The Stranger (in which Savage first launched his now-syndicated sex-advice column Savage Love), “just to see what we could get,” said Savage. The submissions inundated the editorial offices, containing a cornucopia of homemade sex recordings—straight, gay, trans, pee fetish, messy food kink—all of it sex-positive, inspiring Savage to really mount the festival in Seattle. HUMP! eventually branched out with a Portland version, and now much of the U.S., as well as Canadian hubs Toronto, Vancouver and Victoria, can enjoying viewing an annual crop of down-to-earth, down-n-dirty amateur porn, a welcome alternative to corporate, paint-by-numbers adult entertainment. In recent years, HUMP! tour screenings have attracted as much as 20,000 attendees.

Cell phones are not allowed in screenings, and the films are destroyed afterwards. “Porn stars in a movie theater for a week,” Savage says, not “for all eternity on the Internet,” therefore keeping the porn genuine and the sex positive.

“Initially people are thrown back in their chairs. You’re a straight guy watching hardcore gay porn, or you’re a gay guy watching cunnilingus,” Savage has observed of new festival goers. And then, “Everyone is cheering and clapping after every film. At first all anybody can see is the differences. And halfway through everyone starts to see the similarities, or that everything is exactly the same.”

Of the films that are accepted into the festival, the audience votes for the sexiest, kinkiest and funniest films, each winning $2,000. Best in show takes home $5,000. This year’s roster has some intriguing flicks.

A Sunday Hike is described as “The Blair Witch Project meets an anarchist EDM festival in this witchy, magical, queer porn.” Oh The Savings involves masturbation with a wallet thick with cash. Dildrone does something we’ve all been dreaming of: it documents a drone equipped with a dildo.

HUMP!’s next stop is Los Angeles, running from February 22 to March 3, although there are 33 more festival dates scheduled at a theatre near you.
