Following President Trump’s attempt to gaslight the nation with a fact-revising speech at what was essentially a campaign rally in Phoenix last night, countless people offered their takes on the horrifying assault on our ears and brains. Veteran newsman Dan Rather lamented 45’s attempt to “create an alternate reality.” Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton, who had urged the commander-in-chief to delay his rally, stated the speech “tended to divide the country, not unite the country.” One of the most eloquent from CNN’s out anchor Don Lemon who said he was speaking from the heart as he began an address directly to the camera.
“What we have witnessed is a total eclipse of the facts,” Lemon continued. “Someone who came out on stage and lied directly to the American people and left things out that he said in an attempt to rewrite history, especially when it comes to Charlottesville.”
Lemon didn’t hold back in his criticism. “He’s unhinged. It’s embarrassing — and I don’t mean for us, the media, because he went after us, but for the country,” he added. “This is who we elected president of the United States, a man who is so petty that he has to go after people he deems to be his enemy like an imaginary friend of a 6-year-old. His speech was without thought, it was without reason, it was devoid of facts, it was devoid of wisdom. There was no gravitas, there was no sanity there. He was like a child blaming a sibling on something else. ‘He did it, I didn’t do it.’ He opened up the race wound from Charlottesville.”
