According to the Standardized Flagrant Scale of Bopness, 22-year-old Troye Sivan’s new single “My My My” is a bonafide bop. It’s smooth, chill, and weirdly sexy, and it’s already stuck in our heads after two listens. By the way, we say “weirdly” because Troye looks like he’s 17.
“’My My My!’ is a song of liberation, freedom, and love,” said Sivan in a press release. “Throw all inhibition to the wind, be present in your body, love wholeheartedly, move the way you’ve always wanted to, and dance the way you feel – hopefully even to this song!”
So if you can get past the idea of a 17-year-old-looking boy being sexualized for queer viewers, then you might enjoy the video, too. Disregarding Troye’s suggestive writhing, the video derives entertainment value from its many shots of Troye running through a warehouse filled with half naked men. In fact, one of those men is gay porn star Justin Brody. (He literally just stands there in the warehouse like it’s his job.)
“Go slow, no, no, go fast,” coos Sivan as he runs through a hallway of flickering lights before stopping and deciding to just sing in place for a few seconds. (And then he runs again.) Don’t watch this video if you’re prone to seizures.
Sivan, who has some serious songwriting and dancing ability, has been teetering on the verge of mainstream success for some time now. The Australian star’s debut album, Blue Neighbourhood, brought him critical acclaim and a handful of awards; additionally, Sivan has appeared on the covers of Rolling Stone, Out, and V Magazine. Most impressively, he was recently tapped to be the face of the Valentino Spring 2018 menswear advertising campaign.
The New York Times also recently hailed Sivan as a “prototype for tomorrow’s global pop star,” so you should probably get on board now if you want to appear even marginally hip to the youths of today.
