I’m not crying. You’re crying. The first full-length trailer for Boy Erased is a total tearjerker and the film looks like a potential Oscar contender.
Adapted from Garrard Conley’s autobiographical book, “Boy Erased: A Memoir,” the movie tells the harrowing story of a teenager coerced into conversion therapy, an attempt to pray away the gay and ‘cure’ his homosexuality.
Oscar winners Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe portray the Bible-(t)humping parents of small-town teen Jared (Oscar nominee Lucas Hedges.) Director/screenwriter Joel Edgerton co-stars as the head therapist in charge of the conversion program. The cast includes queer luminaries Broadway powerhouse Cherry Jones, filmmaker/actor Xavier Dolan and singer Troye Sivan.
Lucas Hedges is on a roll. Having nabbed a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award nomination for Manchester by the Sea, he was lauded for his performances in Oscar nominated Lady Bird and Oscar-winner Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Next up, he returns to Broadway this Fall alongside Michael Cera and Elaine May in Kenneth Lonergan’s “The Waverley Gallery” and then will star with Julia Roberts in Ben is Back, the next film written and directed by his father, Peter Hedges.
Boy Erased is scheduled for release on November 2, just in time for awards season.
But can we talk about Kidman’s fried blonde wig? THAT mess is not gonna win any prizes.
