It can’t be a coincidence that a day after Kathy Griffin finally made her triumphant return to Hollywood, Google Doodle debuted an illustrated recitation of Maya Angelou’s “Still I Rise:”
“You may write me down in history / With your bitter, twisted lies, / You may trod me in the very dirt / But still, like dust, I’ll rise.”
Sure enough, Griffin rose last night after almost a year of entertainment exile. The twist, however, was that Griffin appeared as Kellyanne Conway on an episode of The President Show, which Flagrant covered in October.
ICYMI, Griffin attracted Hollywood and governmental ire last year for a photo shoot in which she appeared with a replica of a severed Trump head — which, again, we had ALL pictured ourselves doing already.
But last night, Griffin appeared unfazed and with a boner to pick as Lying Kellyanne, who recently got fingered in real life as the drippy White House leaker who’s been sharing sensitive info with the press. And while Griffin mostly just played herself on The President Show, the program’s makeup and costume teams did a bang-up job of making Griffin look like the famous straw-haired fibber that we’ve come to know and hate. Either that, or Griffin’s stressful yearlong exile from Hollywood has aged her ten years.
Introduced as “the lone survivor of the Bowling Green Massacre,” Griffin-as-Conway then performed an “act” in which she put a positive spin on “the worst people in history,” including Bernie Madoff and Jeffrey Dahmer. (“At the end of the day, Jeff is just a foodie,” she claimed. “Our workforce could use more Americans with that kind of appetite for life.”)
It wasn’t as nuanced a performance as Kate McKinnon’s iconic impersonation on SNL, but it was still juicy to watch Griffin skewer the administration that had once tried to bury her. Watch for yourself below.
Griffin continues her “Laugh Your Head Off” tour, with North America dates starting May.
