We’re one step away from losing same-sex marriage and reproductive rights, but let’s focus on the positive: Progressives are growing stronger, and we’re not dead.
In a stunning overturn, 28-year-old Democratic socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez defeated Rep. Joe Crowley, a 10-term incumbent, in New York’s 14th Congressional District primary on Tuesday.
That’s like Bernie beating Hillary, except in a not-sad way! It also sends a strong message to the Democratic Party to get its shit together and stop putting its money behind moderates. Conservatives are taking over the Supreme Court and running this country to the ground: This is no time to play it safe.
Ocasio-Cortez is on the record as saying she’d vote to impeach Trump should she be elected to Congress.
Fellow progressive Cynthia Nixon had endorsed Ocasio-Cortez, and vice versa. Nixon celebrated the surprising win at her victory party Tuesday evening.
Additionally, progressives won gubernatorial elections in Maryland and Colorado, thanks to former NAACP head Ben Jealous prevailing in Maryland and Rep. Jared Polis trouncing his competition in Colorado. This is great news for two main reasons: (1) If Polis wins, he’ll be the first openly gay man elected governor in the United States, and (2) Ben Jealous can now have an election campaign ad that is just a picture of him sipping a martini with the tagline: “Jealous?”
So basically, progressives are forcing the Democratic Party to look at its life and look at its choices, and to not pull anymore shady shit like rigging elections in moderates’ favor. Ahem, Bernie.
But will the Democratic Party listen? Trump just won key victories in South Carolina and New York, and there are still privileged white straight people out there who won’t vote Democrat if they aren’t “excited” about any of the candidates. (To which we say: Bitch, this isn’t about you. This is about America.)
Anyway, the battle lines have been drawn, and the glitter bombs have been loaded. We just hope the Democrats make the right move.
