What’s the greatest gift you can give a friend? As it turns out, it’s writing a horrific, racist tweet that gets you fired, thus opening the door for your friend to boost her career with a spin-off show.
Weeks after cancelling its hit show Roseanne, ABC is reportedly moving forward with a spin-off show centered around Darlene (out actor, talk show host Sara Gilbert.) All they have to do now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, is get Roseanne Barr to walk away from the franchise. This is turning out to be quite difficult, thanks to the “precarious nature” of the negotiations and Barr’s “volatile disposition.” (That’s industry speak for “Roseanne is an idiotic racist lunatic and we are running out of cocaine.”)
Series stars John Goodman and Laurie Metcalf are also on board for the spinoff, which is just more bad news for Barr (though great for us.) How does one confront the fact that one is an idiotic racist lunatic, and that all of one’s friends are willing to sever professional ties with one because of this?
Barr, who no doubt goes to sleep at night by playing that viral recording of children being separated from their parents at the border, has some serious soul-searching to do. Will she be able to come to terms with her own bigotry in time for the spinoff to go into production, thus restoring jobs to hundreds of writers and crew members? (A.K.A. Something she supposedly cared about when she voted for Trump?) Or will she continue to stubbornly beg and plead with ABC executives to restore her late-in-life career revival? At the time of this post, execs were reportedly discussing a one-time payment to Barr, a “go-away money,” as one source put it.
Is it time for Roseanne to embark on some sort of Eat Pray Love, Racist Edition?
Find out next week on Roseanne Barred … from Hollywood.
