October is finally here and that means one thing. No, not the opportunity to dress in a thong and feathery angel’s wings for Halloween…although, that makes two things we love about the month. The other one is officially the beginning of Oscar-bait movie season. You know, movies made for adults. Here are 10 movies we’re excited about and a couple that could garner some love from Oscar next year.

Chavela
Release Date: October 4
Why You Need To See It: A captivating portrait of the commanding, out lesbian ranchero singer who achieved fame early, drifted into alcoholism and obscurity and rose again late in life. An inspiration to many, including filmmaker Pedro Almodovar.

Release Date: October 6
Why You Need To See It: The long-awaited sequel to 1982 neo-noir sci-fi classic starring Harrison Ford (and bonkers Sean Young) is finally here. Early reviews are mostly positive.

The Florida Project
Release Date: October 6
Why You Need To See It: Who did not love Tangerine? Filmmaker Sean Baker’s latest is a poignant look at an unorthodox mother/daughter relationship set at a low budget motel. Willem Dafoe portrays the compassionate hotel manager and delivers what many are saying could be an Oscar-nominated performance.

Release Date: October 13
Why You Need To See It: The real life story of the celebrated artist whose name has become synonymous with homoerotica is told in this biopic which suggests his iconic drawings of muscular, well-endowed men was a refuge from the harrowing times in which he lived.

Wonderstruck
Release Date: October 20
Why You Need To See It: Director Todd Haynes has given us numerous queer classics (Poison, Far From Heaven, Carol) so his films are always required viewing. His latest, based on an acclaimed novel by Brian Selznick, features Julianne Moore and Michelle Williams in a moving story that explores the unexpected connection between a deaf girl in 1927 and a runaway boy in 1977.

120 Beats Per Minute 
Release Date: October 20
Why You Need To See It: Widely acclaimed when it premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival (it was favorably compared to Larry Kramer’s seminal The Normal Heart), this drama from French director Robin Campillo focuses on a group of HIV/AIDS activists in the Paris chapter of ACT UP during the early ’90s.

Why You Need To See It: Elisabeth Moss and Dominic West headline this acclaimed (winner of the Palme d’Or at Cannes, hello) art-world satire about the chaos that surrounds an installation in a Stockholm museum.

Release Date: October 13
Why You Need To See It: The early career of  first African-American Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall is told in this highly anticipated drama from director Reginald Hudson featuring an all-star cast that includes Chadwick Boseman, Sterling K. Brown, Jussie Smollett and Kate Hudson.

Release Date: October 13
Why You Need To See It: The latest comedy-drama from Noah Baumbach (The Squid and the Whale) offers yet another story about a dysfunctional family (Dustin Hoffman, Ben Stiller and Adam Sandler) was widely hailed at its Cannes premiere.

Release Date: October 27
Why You Need To See It: George Clooney polished off an unproduced screenplay by the Coen Bros and cast queer faves Matt Damon, Oscar Isaac and Julianne Moore in this 1959-set comedy he directed about a small town criminal.
