TLC is terminating Derick Dillard’s participation in the reality series Counting On, after the show regular tweeted transphobic comments about Jazz Jennings, the star of another TLC series, I am Jazz.
Dillard, the 28-year old husband of Jill Duggar Dillard, felt the urge to voice his poorly informed opinion about Jazz Jennings, tweeting: “I pity Jazz, for those who take advantage of him in order 2 promote their agenda”, adding, “It’s sad that ppl would use a juvenile in this way.”
As if this statement isn’t sufficiently offensive and ignorant on the importance the show has for Ms. Jennings and other trans youth, Dillard tried to cover his ass, by weakly attempting to sound conciliatory, compassionate and concerned in further tweeting: “Again, nothing against him, just unfortunate what’s on TV these days. Also has anyone looked into whether a child is capable of making that kind of decision. We can’t vote til we’re 18; our brains aren’t fully developed til around 25.” Obviously, Dillard’s brain development is still in the embryonic stage.
Soon after, TLC added their own Twitter response: “We want to let our viewers know that Derick Dillard has not participated in Counting On for months and the network has no plans to feature him in the future.” TLC, trying to squash any accusations of wavering on the issue, added a follow-up tweet: “We want to reiterate that Derick’s personal statements do not reflect the views of the network. TLC is proud to share the story of Jazz Jennings and her family and will continue to do so.”
Mr. Dillard, nor his wife Jill Duggar Dillard, have responded to the TLC axing, probably realizing that further ignorant or offensive comments would bring more unwanted publicity upon the already disgraced bible-thumping Duggar clan. It wasn’t too long ago that Josh Duggar was revealed to have molested his own sisters, including Derick Dillard’s own wife Jill. Clearly, Mr. Dillard did not get the memo that the Christian ‘moral’ righteousness he is spewing, echoes the empty hypocritical moralizing of his discredited in-laws.
As for TLC, the often controversial reality channel has famously dragged its heels on making the right decision, including its initial attempt to continue airing Here Comes Honey Boo Boo even after it was revealed that the show’s “Mama June” was dating Mark Anthony Daniel, a registered sex offender who was convicted of forcing sex on “Mama June’s” own daughter. The cable channel continued to show it’s lack of resolve when just last August it allowed Mr. Dillard to continue participating in Counting On after he tweeted inflammatory statements about Jennings, including: “’Transgender’ is a myth.”
Notably, the most mature and graciously composed reaction to Mr. Dillard’s deeply offensive Twitter comments, including referring to Jazz Jennings with a male pronoun, came from Jennings herself. The 17-year old who is bravely allowing the world to follow along on her deeply personal journey as a young transgendered woman, showed incredible restraint and strength, tweeting: “In the face of constant ignorance and hatred I prefer to disregard negative opinions and continue moving forward with love.”
