Burning Caps And Burning Bridges, Trump Angers Allies And Enemies Alike

Politics

Former Trump supporters are so butthurt that the Opportunist-in-Chief has ditched them for new BFFs Chuck and Nancy, they are indulging their arsonist tendencies by burning their Make America Great Again hats and matching apparel. Scores of proud deplorables are tweeting photos of their singed red baseball hats, while others with more time on their hands are filming their act of protest to Trump’s current DACA-friendly dialogue—this will change in a New York second, goobers, then you’ll miss your greasy antagonistic cap. Luis Withrow aka @_weese_ starts off wearing a MAGA hat in his video, which is very well scripted and choreographed: he conducts his personal Burning Man at night on his mom’s covered porch, locusts and crickets resounding in the background, ticking off a list of Trump disappointments before removing his chapeau and setting it ablaze on top of his mother’s glass table near the citronella candle. Luis, who looks about 14, stares dramatically at the camera while telling @realDonaldTrump, “Your move.” He does not burn his Red Hot Chili Peppers T-shirt. Many hat burners tagging @realDonaldTrump have been using hashtags like #BurnMyMAGAHat, #BuildTheWall, #NoAmnesty, and last but not least the Bannon/Breitbart News coined #AmnestyDon that must really irritate him. All that carefully crafted name-calling during Trump’s campaign and thereafter—Crooked Hillary, Lyin’ Ted Cruz, Lightweight Choker Marco Rubio—now smells like Steve Bannon propaganda.

To be fair and show that Donald J. Trump can be despised at both ends, Michelangelo Signorile makes a frightfully sound argument that Small Orange Hands is the “most anti-LGBTQ president in U.S. history,” even more so than Reagan who did NOTHING to help those with HIV and AIDS. According to Signorile’s examination of these eight months since he took office, Trump has enacted more anti-LGBTQ policies than in the terms served by Reagan, both Bushes, and all other presidents combined. Although each of those recent GOP heads of state catered largely to evangelical white voters, George W. Bush did not repeal the progressive pro-gay policies discreetly put in place by Bill Clinton, a Democrat, but he didn’t expand on them either. Already Trumpass has repealed so much.

It seems among the press, there was a hope in Hell that Trump, the big city New Yorker would be mellow on LGBTQ issues. However, anti-LGBTQ Mike Pence is his chosen vice-president, anti-LGBTQ Jeff Sessions his attorney general, and government programs benefitting the LGBTQ community are being cut or made null. Actions taken by the U.S. Justice Department, headed by Jeff Sessions (who earned a zero rating from the LGBTQ advocacy group the Human Rights Campaign), openly promote discrimination against gays, lesbians and bisexuals in the workplace and in public places like the Colorado bakery whose owner wants to refuse service to gay customers. That last issue was likely made a Supreme Court case by a fourth vote cast by Trump appointee and “religious liberty fanatic” Neil Gorsuch. Gorsuch is a nightmare Supreme Court judge for everyone, but especially the LGBTQ community.

The list goes on: the ban on transgender in the military, the withdrawal of federal protections for transgender students, and nutcase Betsy Devos pledging federal funds to schools that discriminate against LGBTQ students. Plus there’s the sneaky business of removing LGBTQ references from government programs like data-collecting censuses for the elderly and in the context of protecting “LGBTQ youth” from sex trafficking.

Trump’s shameful actions are a win for conservative evangelicals and rabid homophobe Mike Pence. Why does it bother the vice president so much?

Signorile is on point: we must be as vigilant as the hat burners to wake up the press, besides Rachel Maddow and Lawrence O’Donnell, to report on these widespread injustices.
