Five Movies You Definitely Need To See In September

Entertainment, Featured

September is upon us. The blockbuster movies from summer are ending their theatrical runs, yet it’s still a bit early for the obvious awards bait releases. Here are five movies we’re excited about and a couple that may go the distance and score some love from Oscar next year.

Battle of the Sexes
Release Date: September 22
Why You Need To See It: A retelling of the story behind the legendary 1973 tennis match between not-yet-out champ Billie Jean King (recent Oscar-winner Emma Stone) and Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell). The match was the most watched televised sporting event and the comedy-drama is the latest from Little Miss Sunshine directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle
Release Date: September 22
Why You Need To See It: The sequel to the campy action hit reunites the team in a plot that has them saving the world. But who are we kidding? There’s eye candy for everyone with a cast that includes Colin Firth, Halle Berry, Julianne Moore, Channing Tatum and Taron Egerton.

Manolo: The Boy Who Made Shoes For Lizards
Release Date: September 15
Why You Need To See It: Sex and the City fans will recall Carrie Bradshaw’s obsession with Manolo Blahnik footwear. Now comes a revealing documentary that shows the noted luxury designer got his start making shoes for lizards. Anna Wintour, Rihanna, Andre Leon Talley, Naomi Campbell and Rupert Everett step in for cameos.

Mother
Release date: September 15
Why You Need To See It: Director Darren Aronofsky has mind-fucked us with his past works such as Requiem for a Dream and Black Swan and the trailer for this movie indicates he’s going to do it again. Not much is known about the plot other than it revolving around a couple’s (Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem) tranquil life being disrupted by uninvited guests (Michelle Pfeiffer and Ed Harris), but the film’s poster evokes some serious Rosemary’s Baby-like chills.

Victoria & Abdul
Release date: September 22
Why You Need To See It: The great Dame Judi Dench reprises her role as Queen Victoria (20 years after Mrs. Brown) in a story of Her Majesty’s unlikely friendship with an Indian man who becomes her servant and eventually her teacher. This is directed by master filmmaker Stephen Frears, who’s given us My Beautiful Launderette, The Queen, Dangerous Liaisons and last year’s Florence Foster Jenkins.
