Mark Salling and his character “Puck” on Glee were always notorious for the wrong reasons, and Salling remained that way — right up until his death today.
Salling was reportedly found in the riverbed of Los Angeles’ Sunland neighborhood — an area near where he lived. According to police, Salling may have died from an apparent suicide after hanging himself. It is unclear yet how his body washed up on the riverbed.
Salling was awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty to possession of child pornography involving pubescent minors. Officials say he had 50,000 images of underage children. It’s possible that Salling may have been so distraught over the charges and impending sentencing that he decided to end his own life.
The apparent suicide has occurred only four and a half years after Salling’s Glee costar Corey Monteith died of an overdose in a Vancouver hotel in 2013. We are hoping that the “Rule of Threes” doesn’t apply to Glee — the rule being that celebrities die in threes.
While Salling turned out to be a monstrous figure post-Glee, it’s still worth remembering some of his best moments on the show as Puck — such as when he bullied Kurt. And when he had an affair with Rachel’s mom right after fathering a child with Quinn. Oh wait. Shit. He kind of sucked on the show, too. Well, he probably did, like, some good stuff that someone will remember at some point. Maybe.
However, it bears mention that suicide is still a major epidemic in this country, and that the number for the National Suicide Prevention Hotline is 1-800-273-8255.
