If at any point this week you find yourself thinking that your life isn’t together, just remember that Katy Perry exists. In just the past year, she’s bombed at the VMAs, faced a major identity crisis, and earned tepid reviews for Witness. And in just the past week, she’s sexually harassed a teenager and flashed her lady parts on national television.
In what appeared to be a grab for attention and/or ratings, the 33-year-old Perry forced a kiss on a 19-year-old virgin on the premiere of American Idol Sunday — right after the teen said he was saving his first kiss for a relationship. However, at the time, the kid in question, whose name is Benjamin Glaze, seemed to laugh it off — despite Perry clearly violating him by surprising him with a kiss on the lips when he was only expecting a kiss on the cheek.
But now, Glaze, is coming forward to the New York Times and claiming the kiss was “uncomfortable” and that it sent him into a tailspin.
“Would I have done it if she said, ‘Would you kiss me?’ No, I would have said no,” Glaze said. “I know a lot of guys would be like, ‘Heck yeah!’ But for me, I was raised in a conservative family and I was uncomfortable immediately. I wanted my first kiss to be special.”
Glaze added that he had to seek reassurance from his friends back in Oklahoma in order to be satisfied that he had not betrayed his own moral code. However, he also added that he did not view the incident as sexual harassment. Hmm.
Now, to be fair, kissing Katy Perry would lead most people to question their life choices. On just Night Two of this week’s Idol episodes, Perry fell down during a contestant’s audition and flashed her vag at the cameras.
But this was an obvious case of an older person taking advantage of a younger person in a sexualized manner. Could the conservative Glaze be shying away from calling the kiss sexual harassment because he doesn’t want to take part in the left-championed #MeToo movement?
In any case, Perry’s move shouldn’t come as a surprise: American Idol is prone to condoning sexual harassment. After all, Ryan Seacrest is still the host.
