MeTV viewers who wake up, before the sun, to catch I Love Lucy or The Lucy Show (Here’s Lucy streams on Amazon Prime or Hulu) will be THRILLED to learn Amazon Studios has picked up the drama Lucy and Desi from Escape Studios. Scripted by very busy Aaron Sorkin, the role of the eternal Lucille Ball will reportedly be filled by chameleon Cate Blanchett. The project producers are Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch.
In 1950, Ball and former husband Desi Arnaz together formed Desilu Productions, known for the pioneering TV comedy classic I Love Lucy and subsequent eponymous sitcoms, as well as Star Trek and The Untouchables. Escape Studios’ depiction of their business partnership and stormy personal life is authorized by the couple’s children, Lucie Luckinbill and Desi Arnaz Jr., who control the rights to their separate memoirs, source material for the project.
Casting for Desi Arnaz is underway—the always watchable Javier Bardem is a possibility—and it will be interesting to see who plays I Love Lucy costars William Frawley and Vivian Vance (Lucy’s good friend offscreen). Let’s not forget the consummate professional Gale Gordon who appeared alongside many Desilu incarnations of Lucy.
