“When the night has been too lonely and the road has been too long, and you think that love is only for the lucky and the strong, just remember in the winter — far beneath the bitter snows — lies the seed, that with the sun’s love, in the spring, becomes the rose.”
— Mahatma Gandhi
We thought we’d open this article with an inspirational quote because there is much to celebrate. Despite facing hate from brainless, ignorant losers for months over their decision to publicly denounce the nation’s gun laws following a brutal shooting at their high school, David Hogg and Cameron Kasky, for just a fleeting moment, seemed to find love beneath the bitter snows.
Yesterday, Kasky announced the pairing on Twitter via a picture of the two embracing and a caption that read, “Prom 2018.” The pic caused a stir at first, due to only Kasky being openly gay — but the Internet soon decided that this was not a drill and that two of the nation’s premier teen gun rights activists were in fact both queer and going to prom together.
Were we surprised at this? Of COURSE not. Of COURSE two of the men leading the movement to ban assault rifles were queer. It’s straight dudes who got us into this mess in the first place. (See: The original authors of the Declaration of the Independence. Seriously, what a bunch of tools.)
But then TMZ blew in with the wintry, bitter snows and brought the news that no, Hogg and Kasky were not, in fact, going to prom together. Kasky was too young for senior prom, and was not in a romantic relationship with Hogg. Hogg, was in fact, going to prom with another date. Our hearts, they broke.
So it seems that, for now, it would be inappropriate to start planning Hogg’s and Kasky’s wedding — even with a cute hashtag like #JustAKoggInTheWheel — but let’s try to stay optimistic. As Confucius once said, “There can be miracles when you believe. Though hope is frail, it’s hard to kill. Who knows what miracles you can achieve when you believe? Somehow you will. You will when you believe.”
