Remember when Kathy Griffin did that awesome/grotesque/characteristically shocking thing? You know the thing. No, not that thing. No, not that thing either. The other thing. The thing where she leaked photos of herself holding a fake decapitated Trump head. Remember when she then proceeded to let her fans down by apologizing for it?
Well, she reneged on that apology in August and now she’s acting like it never even happened. Griffin, who announced a worldwide tour around the same time she apologized, just made her first public appearance since June at an “Aid for AIDS” fundraiser in Los Angeles. Since Griffin is a total badass, she totally owned her controversial stunt-queening by appearing in a Trump mask and flipping off the audience with both hands.
She also had some harsh words for Harvey Weinstein, just hours after Weinstein was fired from his own company for harassing and abusing countless women during his reign of terror as a Hollywood power player.
“That guy seems to be what’s called a rapist,” she said. “There’s a lot of them and they are everywhere. So it’s time we started to fucking look out for each other because this shit has been going on for way too long.”
Griffin’s jabs at Trump don’t seem to be getting people riled up this time around, and her tour is currently tracking to sell out in some countries. So what happened to make people forgive her? Which of Trump’s several thousand awful actions since June was the thing that finally made people go, “Well fuck, I kinda wanna decapitate the guy too.” Was it the trans military ban? Was it the Pence/NFL stunt? Or was it the fact that he still hasn’t learned how to wear a freaking tie?
Or maybe this was all just a brilliant publicity stunt. Maybe Griffin knew fully well that people would throw a hissy fit over her holding a Trump head. Maybe she figured it would draw more media attention to her eventual tour announcement. Maybe she also knew that if she withdrew from the public eye for a few months and gave people enough time to get angry about literally everything else happening in the world, her liberal fans would forgive her over time and not effectively end her career.
Still, there’s at least one person who’s not about to jump on the Griffin Train. Jeffrey Mezger, the CEO of KB Home, recently filed a restraining order against Griffin (who replied in kind) over Griffin’s alleged use of cameras to spy on Mezger and his family. It sounds certifiably insane, and more like a fabricated justification for why he got SO angry at Griffin recently that he just HAD to call her a bunch of homophobic and sexist slurs in a recorded exchange that was leaked online. Griffin said in a statement that Mezger had used the slurs because he was angry about Griffin calling in a noise complaint about his household.
Ugh. The only thing that could make this better is if Griffin and Anderson Cooper finally made up. Remember when she revealed that he hadn’t called her since she got fired from CNN? And she was all like “whatever I don’t need him,” but she was secretly thinking “omg please call me?” Well, if you don’t remember, then you know now. It was sad and it’s time for A-Coop to take Kathy back.
