Despite the hole that Trump and the Republicans have dug for themselves, they’ve somehow managed to dig even deeper. In fact, they’ll probably keep digging for the rest of Trump’s short term until they finally get to Hell and convince Satan to run for a Senate position. Honestly, he’d make a better candidate than accused child molester and rapist Roy Moore, whom the President is now fully supporting in his race for an Alabama Senate seat.
In addition to claiming that the Republicans desperately need Moore to pass legislation like their tax plan — which passed through the Senate easily last weekend despite the lack of Moore’s supposedly crucial presence — Trump is now fully encouraging Alabama voters to support Moore.
“We cannot afford … to lose a seat in the very, very close United States senate,” he said at a rally Friday, seemingly leaving out the word “race” at the end of his surprisingly intelligible sentence.
Trump also tweeted over the weekend that the Republican Party “can’t have a Pelosi/Schumer liberal Democrat, [Doug Jones], in that important Alabama seat.”
Is Trump aware that only people in Alabama can vote in the Alabama senate race? Why is he telling the entire country who to vote for in Alabama? (Still, we can guarantee you that there are Trump supporters in Oklahoma filling out absentee ballots right now, thinking they can vote in other states as long as the President tells them to.)
Also, we love that Trump is randomly tossing off Democratic Minority Leaders Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer’s names as if the mere fact that they’re Democrats will piss off his supporters and convince them that Pelosi and Schumer have evil plans in mind for Moore’s opponent, Doug Jones. Trump has claimed that Jones is a “puppet” for Pelosi and Schumer, but there’s no evidence that there’s a strong connection between the three. It’s basically like someone in a high school election saying, “We can’t vote for Susan for Senior Class President because we can’t have a Hitler/Stalin puppet in office,” before presumably adding, “OH, AND SHE’S A VIRGIN WHO CAN’T DRIVE!”
A progressive group expertly trolled Trump at the Florida rally in which he supported Moore on Friday night with a mobile billboard featuring a direct quote from the president’s daughter Ivanka: “There’s a special place in Hell for people who prey on children.”
And despite the relatively recent revelation that the spineless leaders of the Republican Party have now done a 180 and actually rallied behind Trump’s decision to support Moore, who we should probably remind you is an accused CHILD MOLESTER, a recent Pew poll has revealed that only 32% of the public approves of the way Trump is handling his job as President. Additionally, 69% of Americans think senior Trump officials “probably or definitely” had improper contacts with Russia during the campaign, while — surprise, surprise —only 19% of Republicans think the ongoing Robert Mueller investigation into Russia dealings is “important.”
It’s pretty clear what Republicans think is important now: empowering homophobes, normalizing white nationalism, and stealing money from the poor. It’s also pretty clear that their party line of being “troubled” by the accusations against Roy Moore is nothing more than a tremendous, stinking lie.
